Course #1 “SUSTAINABILITY”

Target students: BSc and MSc students from any disciplinary program in UNISI, technical/administrative staff in UNISI, external practitioners, officers and stakeholders.

Course description: launched in 2013, the interdisciplinary course focuses on environmental, economic, political, energetic and social aspects of sustainability. The main objective is to provide a general viewpoint on the multiple issues of sustainability and promote a systemic holistic approach. Specific objectives are:

– Providing the knowledge basis to understand the multiple issues of sustainability.

– Defining and managing the environmental, economic, political, energetic and social aspects of sustainability for communication and planning.

– Performing the systemic approach to manage the complexity of sustainability.

– Building capacities of UNISI students to deal with sustainability and confirm the role of UNISI for the sustainable development of the Mediterranean area.

Course #2 “Environmental Sustainability Indicators”

Target students: M.Sc. in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Sustainability

Course description: introduction to the knowledge framework and the four pillars of Sustainability, the environmental, economic, social and institutional. Ecological-economic indicators for assessing the multiple aspects of sustainability are investigated and classified with a input-state-output framework. Among the indicators and accounting methods presented: Material  Flow  Accounting;  Emergy  evaluation;  Ecological Footprint;  IPCC  GHG  Inventory; Index  of  Sustainable  Economic Welfare (ISEW); Ecosystem Services Evaluation.

 

Course #3  “Environmental Physical Chemistry and LCA”

Target students: M.Sc. in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Sustainability

Usual number of students: 20

Duration: 64 hours

Teaching method: frontal lectures and laboratories

Supporting tools: web-based open LCA software

Course description: Module #1: Environmental Physical Chemistry: introduction to the scientific basis of sustainability. Module #2: Life Cycle Assessment and Certification: introduction to the Life Cycle Assessment and the evaluation of potential impacts referring to different Impact Categories. Workshop on LCA of specific processes such as agricultural, breeding and manufacturing.
