Ecodynamics Group developed a Sustainability Study of the Abruzzo Region (2007-2008) – on behalf of the Environmental, Energy and Natural parks department – based on the assessment of environmental indicators, including Ecological Footprint, Carbon Footprint and Empower Density (i.e. intensity of environmental resource use), besides the Index of Sustainable Economic Welfar (ISEW).

Results from this integrated assessment have been represented on maps providing a methodological advancement for geo-localisation and spatial analysis to drive environmental policies and plans at the regional level.

The Ecological Footprint, compared to Biocapacity, allowed for assessing the Ecological Deficit per capita, depending on lifestyle and behavior of any single citizen.


The Greenhouse Gas Inventory concerns the emission provided within the region from different sectors of activities, including: Residential-Commercial-Services; Industry; Agriculture; and Carbon Uptake by local Ecosystems. The analysis has been based on the IPCC 2016 guidelines in compliance with the ISO14064 standards (it has not been certified).



The eMergy methodology aims at identifying main energy and material flows that supply human activities in the region. The representation of the areal empower density allowed for determining a consistent geography of resource use and identify hotspots and opportunities for a more sustainable development.
